What Success Looks Like In This Job

Under the general direction and guidance of the Airport Operations and Maintenance Manager, the Operations and Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for planning, directing, and organizing the daily operations and maintenance crew performing a variety of work at the Colorado Air and Space Port (CASP). The work performed includes but is not limited to: operations, custodial care, maintenance, alteration, repair and construction of airport buildings, airfields, and equipment. The Operations & Maintenance Supervisor will work to promote a positive work environment through adhering to high ethical standards, promoting the Adams County and Airport norms and values, policies, procedures, cooperation, teamwork, and leading by example. 

This position provides supervision of all Operations & Maintenance staff, including hiring, scheduling, and performance management; responding to customer complaints, problems, and requests; and maintaining appropriate inventory levels and assisting with maintenance and operations services tasks, as necessary. 

Examples of Duties for Success

The Operations/Maintenance Supervisor has a multi-dimensional role in the day-to-day workings of the Colorado Air and Space Port. The following essential duties and areas of responsibilities:

  • Ensure airport compliance with FAA regulations and advisory documents that govern airport safety
  • Perform airfield inspections to meet or exceed the requirements of FAA advisory circulars.
  • Facilitate and perform maintenance or repair of buildings and airfield facilities.
  • Respond to complaints from airport tenants and businesses as well as off airport noise complaints.
  • Perform Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting duties (ARFF)
  • Operate two-way radios; facilitate 24-hour non-emergency communications
  • Monitor airport weather conditions and issues Notices to Air Missions (NOTAMS) as needed.
  • Assist in the preventative maintenance (daily checks), cleanliness, and proper storage of all aircraft and FBO ground support equipment. 
  • Coordinate snow/ice control operations, construction activities and airfield incident responses
  • Assists with all on-airport construction activity to comply with FAA, State, Federal and local rules, regulations, and codes.
  • Responsible for the training and continuing education of subordinate staff members working under the guidance of the Operations Manager.
  • Assist in FAA-AIP and CDOT grants programs
  • Assist in all airport safety programs.
  • Serve as backup for other FBO/Administrative staff.
  • Other duties as requested or assigned.

Qualifications for Success

  • Working knowledge of airport operations and fixed base operators.
  • General knowledge of heavy equipment operation. 
  • Knowledge of airport administration and procedures.
  • Considerable knowledge of FAA certification requirements, policies,  and procedures, including but not limited to:  
    • 14 CFR Part 77 and 139
    • TSR 1542 and 1544 
    • And applicable Advisory Circulars and Security Directives
  • Methods, practices, and equipment used in Airport Operations & Maintenance 
  • Occupational hazards and Occupation Safety and Health Standards applicable to Airport Operations & Maintenance.
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, practices, tools, and equipment used in the repair and general maintenance of buildings and airfield facilities; general facility maintenance to include buildings, grounds, asphalt, concrete, basic HVAC, etc. 
  • Methods, materials, and equipment used in Airport Operations & Maintenance. 
  • Ability to utilize technology, including computers and associated office software. Apple I-Pad and associated applications.
  • Ability to use wildlife pyrotechnic devices.
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Plan, organize, and direct staff in the proper performance of a variety of operational and maintenance related duties. 
  • Apply principles of personnel supervision, training, and performance evaluation; supervise, train, and evaluate assigned staff.
  • Ability to analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions, and implement recommendations in support of department goals.
  • Keep records and prepare reports.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, representatives of other agencies, and the general public. 

More Qualifications for Success

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities are as follows:
Education & Training: 

  • A bachelor’s degree in Aviation Management, Business Administration, Management, or a related field. 
Experience: 
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ of increasingly responsible experience in an aviation operations and maintenance field.
  • Including a minimum of 1 year of supervisory or lead experience. 
License or Certificate: 
  • A valid Colorado Class R Driver’s License.
  • FEMA NIMS 100, 200, 700, 800 must be obtained within 6 months of hire. 
  • Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting must be obtained within 1 year of hire.
Background Check: Must pass a criminal background check 
Work Environment, Physical Requirements, and Work Schedule: 
  • Work Environment – Regularly exposed to the following conditions: 
    • Exposure to the elements and work in all weather conditions. 
    • Work near moving mechanical parts. 
  • Physical Requirements:  
    • Stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle or feed, Reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Vision Demands: Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less), Distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more), Color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors), Peripheral vision, Depth perception, Ability to adjust focus.
  • NOISE LEVEL: Moderate to Very Loud.
  • WORK SCHEDULE
    • Candidate must be flexible with work hours, which will vary depending on department requirements.
    • Ability to work overtime. 
    • Ability to be on-call and respond on a 24-hour basis.
